St. Andrew’s, Scotland

Cathedral Ruins

Cathedral Ruins

For the last seven months, and for the next five, I have been living in St. Andrew’s Scotland. St. Andrew’s is a college town on the East Fife Coast, known for the University of St. Andrew’s (as well as a couple of royals that met here). The University was built 600 years ago, making it the oldest university in Scotland and the 3rd oldest in the english-speaking world. I live in an apartment just south of the Cathedral ruins, with three flatmates (one from the UK, one from Greece, and one from Japan). The adjustment has been both easier and more difficult than I thought. There are aspects of being so far from the people and the places that you know and are comfortable with that I found a lot more difficult than I thought I would. On the other hand, the people of Scotland and the pace of life in St. Andrew’s is remarkable. Coming from a large city, it is a relief in a way to feel isolated from the rest of the world, and to slow down a bit. The University itself is a lot of work but it has been amazing to be with a group of people that come from all around the world and therefore have a new perspective on things. The more places I live, the more I begin to think of them as people. They have a personality all their own, and there is spirit and a mark that they imprint onto you. Although currently, the cold and the wind prevent me from completely embracing my surroundings, I love it in this town and am going to miss it terribly when I go.
